DIY Guide: Simple Steps to Expand a Decorative Wall Shelf with Additional Shelving
My daughter’s friend has a cute coffin-shaped wall shelf and she wants to add more shelves inside to display some apothecary bottles for Halloween. She asked if I would be able to add more shelves inside and I was happy to do it! In this project, I will show you how to add a few more shelves to a wall shelf using oak craft boards and brad nails. This tutorial can apply to most any wall shelf where a few extra shelves would be helpful! Stay tuned for the step-by-step process!
Materials:
- Boards appropriate for the additional shelving
- 1-1/4″ brad nails and a pneumatic nailer
- Tape measure and pencil
- Miter saw, if needed
Notes About the Project:
I used 1/2″ thick boards and then secured them with 1-1/4″ brad nails through the sides. Pick a board thickness that is appropriate for the thickness of the shelf.
Step One
Determine the angle of the shelf, if necessary. I kind of cheated to find the angle… I placed the shelf on the miter saw and turned the bed until the slot in the bed of the saw lined up with the angle. Turns out it was an 8° angle!
Step Two
I determined the placement of the first shelf—she wanted it where the angle for the bottom met the top. I cut the piece and secured it to the sides using 1-1/4″ brad nails.
Step Three
I determined where the remaining two shelves would be positioned, cut the pieces, and secured them to the sides with brad nails, as well.
I colored the small holes made by the brad nails with a marker just to hide the actual color of the shelf so the holes wouldn’t be too obvious.
She loved it! Here’s how she decorated it:
This was such an easy project and honestly, I never would’ve thought to add a few more shelves to a wall shelf like this. She had a great idea!
