Make a DIY Room Divider

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make a Room Divider

Room dividers are one of the easiest pieces of furniture to construct and they can be finished in so many different ways: Painted, stained, stenciled, papered, tufted, etc. This particular DIY room divider, has decorative holes cut in it (almost like Swiss cheese!) and can easily be constructed using one sheet of plywood or MDF.

  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)

Notes:

The home improvement store where the plywood or MDF is purchased can cut the sheet into the panels for the plan. All you will need will be a 4″ hole saw and a jigsaw!

Step One

Cut the pieces to length using the saw of your choice, unless they’ve already been cut at the home improvement store! Mark the position for the holes on each panel, alternating sides. The first hole will be located 5″ in from the side and 4″ down from the top. The hole on the opposite side will be located 5″ in from the side and 10″ down from the top. The remaining holes will be located 20″ apart on center (from the center of one hole to the next). Using a 4″ hole saw, cut the holes at the positions indicated. To get super clean-cut holes, follow my tutorial on using a holesaw with a drill press – the same principle applies to using a holesaw with a drill.

Use a pencil and a straightedge to draw lines from the top and bottom of the holes to the side edge of the panels (as shown), then cut along the lines with a jigsaw to create the openings.

Step Two

Attach the panels to each other using the hinges. The two outer panels will face the same way while the center panel will be flipped over so the hinge placement may be a bit different.

Finish as desired.

I think this is a really cool DIY room divider! It could be used to separate a space or as in my case, hide a mess! It would also be really nice as a backdrop in a room or on a sun porch.
