Notes About the Project:

If the 2x material has rounded edges, the pieces can be squared off on the table saw by ripping 1/8″ off of each piece. The lengths of some of the horizontal pieces (the bottom, base pieces, and the top frame) will have to be adjusted. This will not affect the length of the side pieces or the bridge.

Step One

Cut the pieces for the sides. With the pocket hole jig set for 1-1/2″ material, dill pocket holes in each piece as indicated in the drawings. Assemble the sides using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the bottom and drill pocket holes along each long edge. Secure to the sides using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws.

Step Three

Cut the remaining base pieces. Secure the 2×12 piece to the bottom using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Secure the 2×4 pieces to each other in an L shape using glue and countersunk 3″ screws. Attach the L shaped assembly to the vertical 2×12 piece using glue and countersunk 3″ screws.

Step Five

Cut the pieces for the top frame. Drill pocket holes in each end of the shorter frame pieces. Assemble the frame using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Use the router and the rabbeting bit to cut a 1/4″ deep rabbet on the top of the frame opening to allow for the glass. Secure the top frame to the sides using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws.

Finish as desired. Secure the glass with a bead of clear silicone.

Another lumber option for these coffee table plans in a Greek Key Style is plywood! Two pieces would have to be cut and laminated together to substitute for each 2x material piece, and edge banding would be applied to the exposed edges. It would be economical and a great way to use a different species of lumber! Need help with any of my plans? Contact me at cher {at} designsbystudioc {dot} com!
