Free Plans for an Easy to Build Chest Inspired by CB2
Today’s plans are for a really versatile chest. It can be used in a bedroom, a family room for media storage, for tool storage, etc. The free plans to build a CB2 inspired Stash chest feature three drawers and a lower cabinet with doors, and the possibilities for customizing the doors are endless! My thinking is that they can be painted with chalkboard paint for notes or for the kiddos to decorate with their artwork!

Step One
If using edge banding, it will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood before assembly.
Cut the pieces for the base. Drill pocket holes in each end of the frame pieces. Attach to the legs as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Two
Cut the piece for the bottom. Position on the base as shown and secure with countersunk 1-1/4″ screws through the bottom into the frame.
Step Three
Cut the pieces for the sides. Drill pocket holes in each of the shorter ends. Attach to the bottom using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Four
Cut the piece for the back. Drill pocket holes as shown, then attach to the sides as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Five
Cut the piece for the top. Attach to the cabinet using glue and pocket hole screws through the holes drilled in the sides and back into the underside of the top.
Step Six
Cut the piece for the shelf. Drill pocket holes in three edges. Attach to the cabinet as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The shelf will be positioned 3/4″ back from the front edge to allow for the doors.
Step Seven
Cut the piece for the drawer slide divider. Drill pocket holes in the top and back edges as shown. Position the piece 3/4″ back from the front edge and secure using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Eight
Cut the pieces for the drawer boxes. Drill pocket holes in all four edges of the bottom, as well as each end of the sides. Cut 1-1/2″ x 4″ notches in the center of each drawer front and cover with a 1/4″ x 2″ x 5″ piece of plywood using glue and 1/2″ screws. Assemble the drawer boxes as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The fronts of the smaller drawers will overlap the drawer boxes by 3/8″ on one side and 3/4″ on the other to allow for the drawer slide divider. There will be a left and a right drawer with the 3/4″ overlap in the center. The larger drawer will overlap the drawer boxes by 3/8″ on each side.
Install the cabinet side drawers slides at the measurements indicated – 4-1/8″ down from the underside of the top for the upper drawers, and 12-1/4″ down from the underside of the top for the lower drawer. The drawer side hardware will be located at the center of the drawer side. Make any necessary adjustments. There will be a 1/8″ gap around all sides of the drawer fronts as well as in between the two smaller drawers.
Step Nine
Cut the pieces for the doors. Cut the notch as shown and back each notch with a 1/4″ x 2″ x 5″ piece of plywood. Attach the hinges to the doors, then install in the cabinet and make any necessary adjustments.
Finish as desired!
