An Easy Wall-Mounted Solution to Store Blankets and Quilts
Years ago, I built a traditional blanket ladder, and it is currently in my front room. Unfortunately, I have more blankets than I have storage and need an easy way to organize them. I don’t have room for another free-standing ladder. I figured if I build a wall mount blanket ladder, it could be secured behind my bedroom door and keep the blankets within easy reach!
The cool thing about this project is that it can be customized to any length or width. Have a lot of blankets? Make the ladder go from the floor to as high as you can reach! Want is shorter? Make it 3ft. high like I did. The possibilities are endless to make it fit your style and space!
My son gave me the slats from his old bed. I’m not sure what type of wood it is but the slats are smooth with rounded edges, and would be perfect for this project! It is a pretty light color so I don’t think I’ll need to do any finishing at all!
Materials:
- 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
- 2-1/2″ screws (<– affiliate link!)
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (80, 120, 220 grits)
- Screws and auger anchors for mounting
Lumber:
Assorted 1×3 lumber – the length and width will be determined by your design
Cut List:
To make a 3ft. tall by 26-1/2 inches wide ladder like mine, cut:
- 2 – 1×3 at 36″ long – Sides
- 3 – 1×3 at 21-1/2″ long – Slats
- 6 – 1×3 at 4″ long – Bar Supports
- 3 – 1×3 at 24-3/4″ long – Bars
Notes About the Project:
Sand each piece before assembly, making sure to smooth the long edges of the boards. Use a router to round the edges, if necessary!
When mounting, ensure that at least one section is secured to a wall stud. The other sections can be secured using auger anchors.
As a fun alternative, build a blanket ladder chair!
Step One
Cut the pieces for the sides and slats. With the pocket holes jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pockets in each end of the shorter slat pieces. Assemble the frame as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Two
Cut the pieces for the bar supports. Secure them to the vertical framing pieces, spaced as shown in the drawing, using glue and 2-1/2″ screws from the back.
Step Three
Cut the pieces for the bars. Secure the pieces to the front of the bar supports using glue and 2-1/2″ screws. Be sure to place the screws so they don’t potentially interfere with the screws coming through the back side.
Fill the screw holes, if desired. I used gold screw collars (<– affiliate link!) when installing the screws through the bars on the front.
To Mount the Ladder on the Wall:
Determine where you’d like to mount the ladder and find a wall stud. Use a level to make sure the ladder is straight vertically and horizontally, then drive 3″ screws through the framing into the wall stud. For areas of the ladder that cannot be secured to a wall stud, mark the placement for the anchors and secure the ladder frame. Take a look at this tutorial on using auger anchors – it will be very helpful!
