Step One
Edge banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood prior to assembly.
Cut the pieces for the legs, side and divider frames, and side and divider panels. With the pocket hole jig set for 1-1/2″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the 2×2 frame pieces. Secure the frame pieces to the legs using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws.
Set the pocket hole jig for 3/4″ material and drill pocket holes in each end of the 1×2 frame pieces as well as all four edges of the panels. Secure the frame pieces to the legs using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Insert the panel, then secure using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The back face of the panel will be flush with the back face of the legs and frame pieces.
Step Two
Cut the pieces for the bottoms and drill pocket holes in the shorter edges. The longer bottom piece will go in the center. Secure to the side and divider frames as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The back edges will be flush with the back face of the side and divider frames.
Step Three
Cut the pieces for the backs and drill pocket holes in the side edges as well as the bottom edge. Secure to the legs and bottoms using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Four
Cut the pieces for the center mid shelf spacers. Secure the supports as shown to the divider panels using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
Cut the pieces for the shelves and drill pocket holes in the side edges as well as the back edge. Secure to the sides or dividers and back using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The center shelf is deeper than the outer side shelves and secure to the spacers.
Step Five
Cut the pieces for the upper shelves and drill pocket holes in the side edges. Secure to the side or divider frame pieces using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Add a few 1-1/4″ brad nails through the back edge of the upper shelves into the backs.
Step Six
Cut the pieces for the upper stretchers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure the stretchers to the legs using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Seven
Cut the piece for the top. Cut the notch using a jigsaw or bandsaw. Another option would be to draw the lines for the notches and rough-cut just outside the lines. Secure the top to the frame using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails. Use a router with a flush cutting bit to cut the front edge of the top to match the front of the cabinet.
Step Eight
Cut the pieces for the door frames and drill pocket holes in each end of the shorter pieces. Assemble the doors as shown. Attach the aluminum or wire mesh to the back of the door opening using 1/2″ screws and washers.
Install the hinges on the doors, then install the doors in the cabinet. There will be a 1/8″ gap around all sides of the doors in the opening. Install the cabinet pulls.
Finish as desired!
Glass, Plexiglas, or 1/4″ plywood can also be used as the panels for the doors. Have any questions about the Shelbourne media console plans? Contact me at cher {at} designsbystudioc {dot} com!
