Console Stereo into a Liquor Cabinet

How to Turn a Console Stereo into a Liquor Cabinet

Most of the furniture makeovers I do are geared toward the girls… Pretty and feminine, usually in girly paint shades and not too appealing to the opposite sex.

Well, guys, today is your day!!

I saw this 70’s model console stereo – complete with turntable and 8-track tape player – at my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $5! I couldn’t pass it up especially since I already had an idea in mind… Why not turn it into a sah-wingin’ liquor cabinet for the guys?

The entire cabinet is solid wood and in fantastic shape! Follow along as I share how to turn a console stereo into a liquor cabinet!

I started by removing the electronics.

I removed the dividers for the shutters on the front and reused one of them so I could install two doors. I drilled a pocket hole in each end and centered it in the opening, then secured it with 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. I also added two pieces of lumber in the door openings to act as spacers of sorts so that the new shelf would not be seen.

The shelf at the top (where the turntable used to be) was not deep enough to hold wine bottles in a cradle so I added lumber to each side at the depth where I wanted the shelf to sit, then installed a new shelf.

I removed the hardware holding the lid in place and spray painted it with Rust-Oleum’s Metallic Charcoal spray paint. I painted the entire cabinet and lid with Behr paint in Cracked Pepper.

I cut a new piece of plywood for the bottom and covered it with paintable wallpaper. I also reused the original back, covering it with the wallpaper as well. Both pieces received two coats of Clark + Kensington paint in Ancient Grey. I left the rest of the inside unpainted.

I added a piece of the wallpaper to the shelf in the upper cabinet and painted it as well. I added decorative wood cutouts to the lid and to the front pieces above the doors.

I made a cradle for the wine bottles by using a hole saw to drill 4″ holes in a 1×6 at 5″ on center, and 2″ holes in another 1×6 at 5″ on center. I then ripped the two pieces in half on the table saw to create the cradle. I have one extra set for a future project! I also drilled pocket holes in the back side of the pieces to attach them to the upper shelf. They were also painted with Clark + Kensington in Ancient Grey.

I built doors to fit the openings and added decorative punched aluminum to the openings in the doors which had been spray painted Metallic Charcoal, also.
