How to Make a Quick and Easy Guitar Rack

My son is a musician. His collection of guitars is really growing but his storage space is not. At one time, we looked at hangers specifically for guitars but they tend to be a bit pricey! I told him I could make a customized rack just for him!

He kept reminding me (for a year) to build it and we finally did it together so I will share how to make a quick and easy guitar rack.

He measured his wall space and we cut a piece of PureBond plywood in Birch to fit the area. He thoroughly sanded the piece, then stained it with Rust-Oleum’s Ultimate Wood Stain in Black Cherry and sealed it with Rust-Oleum’s Ultimate Polyurethane in Satin. The plywood took the stain beautifully and the grain pattern is really stunning!

We mounted the board to the wall and secured it to the studs, then installed 2-3/4″ tool hooks along the board. The tool hooks are great because they are coated with rubber which protects the guitar neck and head from damage. The hooks also keep the guitars from rubbing against the wall.

The guitar in the center of the photo was a Christmas present to him and is built from a kit I bought. I used the “swirl method” to paint it and I love how it came out! The bass on the left is also from a kit I gave him for his birthday. He did the majority of the finish work himself staining it with Rust-Oleum’s Ultimate Wood Stain in American Walnut, then sealing with Minwax Laquer in Gloss. Both are truly one of a kind!
