An Easy to Build Bed Inspired by A Catalog Retailer
This bed is one of the easiest to build… The plans to build a Sadie platform bed, inspired by Urban Outfitters, are drawn as a king-size and can be easily scaled down for other sizes (I will list the bed sizes after the Notes About the Project!).
This plan is beginner friendly and can be finished however you wish!
Materials:
- 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws (<– affiliate link!)
- 1-1/4″ screws
- 2-1/2″ screws (<– affiliate link!)
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (80, 120. 220 grits)
- Finishing supplies
Lumber:
- 4 – 1×2 at 8′
- 3 – 1×3 at 4′
- 5 – 2×4 at 8′
- 2 – 4′ x 8′ sheets of 3/4″ plywood
Cut List:
- 2 – 2×4 at 76″ – Head and Foot Rails
- 4 – 1×2 at 35-1/4″ – Head and Foot Supports
- 2 – 2×4 at 80″ – Side Rails
- 2 – 1×2 at 76″ – Side Supports
- 4 – Legs** at 10″
- 1 – 2×4 at 80″ – Center Support
- 2 – 2×4 at 9″ – Center Support Legs
- 3 – 3/4″ plywood at 24″ x 76″ – Base
Notes About the Project:
- The legs are a build-up assembly (see Step One)
- Sand all parts before assembly
- The center support is not secured to the head and foot board – this way, it can be easily removed if the bed needs to be taken apart
Mattress Sizes:
- King – 76″ x 80″
- Queen – 60″ x 80″
- Full – 54″ x 75″
- Twin – 38″ x 75
- This DIY king size platform bed can be adjusted for a different sizes mentioned above: subtract the difference in the length and/or width of the rails and supports. The full and twin sizes don’t need the center support.
Step One
Apply glue to one face of two of the 1x3s. Stack them on top of each other, then stack the third 1×3 on top. Clamp until dry. When the glue is dry, run the piece through the table saw to cut it to width (from 2-1/2″ to 2-1/4″). Start by setting the rip fence at 2-3/8″ and make one pass through the saw. Set the rip fence at 2-1/4″ then flip the piece 180° and run the piece through the table saw to trim the other side. See this post on DIY tapered legs for reference. The legs do not have to be tapered!
Step Two
Cut the pieces for the legs to length. Cut the pieces for the head and foot rails. With the pocket hole jig set for 1-1/2″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the rail pieces. Secure the rails to the legs using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws, aligning the pieces so that the back face of the rails is flush with what will be the back face of the legs.
Step Three
Cut the pieces for the head and foot supports. Position the pieces as shown in the drawing (1″ down from the top with a 1-1/2″ gap between the supports) using glue and 1-1/4″ screws.
Step Four
Cut the pieces for the side rails. Drill pocket holes in each end but locate them so that the rail support will fit between them. Next, cut the pieces for the supports. Position the support on the rail (again, located 1″ down from the top but centered across the rail) and secure with glue and 1-1/4″ screws. Secure the rails to the head and foot assemblies using 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. DO NOT USE GLUE!
Step Five
Cut the piece for the center support and legs. Secure the legs, evenly spaced, to the support using glue and 2-1/2″ screws. Place the center support in the gap between the head and foot supports. It will not be secured to the rails so the bed can be dismantled later.
Step Six
Cut the pieces for the base using a circular saw. Drill holes (for your fingers!) to make the pieces easier to remove as needed.
Finish the frame as desired!
