A Quick and Easy Bookshelf to Build

Need a new bookshelf? The DIY plans to build a Kase Bookshelf feature three shelves and a face frame. This short bookcase with legs is constructed out of off-the-shelf lumber! This is the perfect plan for those new to woodworking and the bookshelf will fit into any space!

Materials:

  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws (<– affiliate link!)
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • 2-1/2″ screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)

Lumber:

  • 2 – 1×2 at 6′
  • 2 – 1×12 at 8′
  • 1 – 3×3 posts at 2′
  • 1 – 2′ x 4′ sheet of 1/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 2 – 1×12 at 42-3/4″ – Sides
  • 3 – 1×12 at- 22-1/2″ – Bottom & Shelves
  • 1 – 1×12 at 24″ – Top
  • 1 – 1/4″ plywood at 23-1/2″ x 42-1/4″ – Back
  • 4 – 3×3 posts at 4-3/4″ – Legs
  • 2 – 1×2 at 24″ – Front Frame
  • 2 – 1×2 at 43-1/2″ – Front Frame

Step One

Cut the pieces for the sides, the bottom, and the shelves. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the bottom and shelf pieces. Secure the bottom and shelves to the sides using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Two

Cut the piece for the top. Secure the top to the sides using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Three

Cut the pieces for the back. Secure the back to the sides, shelves, and top using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Four

Cut the pieces for the legs. Position the legs under the bottom (up against the sides) securing in place using glue and 2-1/2″ screws through the bottom into the legs.

Step Five

Cut the pieces for the front frame. Cut 45° miters in each end of each piece. Drill a pocket hole in each end of the shorter pieces. Assemble the frame using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. A router and a decorative bit can be used to cut the inside and outside edges of the frame!

Secure the frame to the front of the bookshelf using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.
