A Media Stand by Reader Request
These plans to build Matt’s Media Stand are the companion plans to Matt’s Media Tower. This is a simple, and straight forward plan featuring three doors with shelves in each cubby. The doors can also be built as frames with speaker cloth as the panel so that the doors won’t have to be opened to utilize media equipment! How cool is that?
Materials:
- 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
- 1-1/4″ brad nails
- Edge banding (<– affiliate link!)
- 3 sets of hinges
- Cabinet pulls
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
- Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)
Lumber:
- 3 sheets of 3/4″ plywood
Cut List:
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 23-1/4″ – Sides
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 68-1/2″ – Bottom
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 1-1/2″ x 68-1/2″ – Supports
- 3 – 3/4″ plywood at 1-1/2″ x 18-1/2″ – Supports
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 21″ x 68-1/2″ – Back
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 19-1/4″ x 21″ – Dividers
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 70″ – Top
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 18-1/4″ x 22″ – Shelves
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 18-1/4″ x 23″ – Center Shelf
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 20-3/4″ x 21-3/4″ – Doors
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20-3/4″ x 22-3/4″ – Center Door
Step One
Edge banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood prior to assembly.
Cut the pieces for the sides and the bottom. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the bottom piece. Position the bottom 1-1/2″ up from the bottom of the sides and secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Two
Cut the pieces for the supports and drill pocket holes in each end of each piece. Secure the shorter supports the the longer supports using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Secure the entire support assembly to the sides (under the bottom) using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Use a few 1-1/4″ brad nails to further secure the supports to the bottom.
Step Three
Cut the piece for the back and drill pocket holes in the side and bottom edges. Secure to the sides and bottom of the cabinet using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Four
Cut the pieces for the dividers and drill pocket holes in the back and bottom edges. Secure to the back and bottom of the cabinet using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Five
Cut the piece for the top. Secure to the sides, back, and dividers using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
Step Six
Cut the pieces for the shelves noting that the center shelf is 1″ wider. Drill pocket holes in the side and back edges, then secure to the cabinet using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The shelves will be located 1″ back from the front edge of the sides and dividers.
Step Seven
Cut the pieces for the doors noting that the center door is 1″ wider. There will be a 1/8″ gap around all sides of the doors in the openings. Install the hinges on the doors, then install the doors in the cabinet. Install the cabinet pulls.
Finish as desired!
This plan would be a great “first build” for those new to woodworking! The finished piece would also look fabulous with the Glue-Resist Technique used on the doors before staining! Hmmmm…. That has me thinking! Have any questions about the plans to build Matt’s Media Stand? Contact me at cher {at} designsbystudioc {com}!

Built it yesterday! Thanks so much. It turned out great.
Very cool! Do you have a photo you’d like to share? I would love to see it! Thank you for using the plans!
What would be the materials list and dimensions if I needed to make this cabinet 7.5ft wide?
It would just be a matter of adding the difference in length to the horizontal boards and re-spacing the (or adding another) dividers. The additional length would be added to the boards in the materials list. Hope this helps!
