The edges of the 2x4s can be squared on a table saw without affecting the overall size of the base.
Step One
Cut the pieces for the leg base and cut the angles as shown. Make sure to note the angle at each end with a pencil since they are different! With the pocket hole jig set for 1-1/2″ material, drill pocket holes in the pieces as shown. Assemble the base pieces using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Note that there will be two right assemblies and two left assemblies.
Step Two
Position one base assembly on top of another with the pocket holes facing to the inside. Secure the base assemblies to each other using glue and countersunk 2-1/2″ screws.
Step Three
Cut the pieces for the leg stretcher. Position the stretcher between the two leg assemblies and pre-drill holes in the lower portion of each leg assembly. Insert the lag screws and tighten in place.
Step Four
Cut the pieces for the top. Drill pocket holes in each end of the 2×6 pieces as well as one long edge of each piece except one. Secure the pieces to each other using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. Secure a 2×3 to each end of the 2×6 assembly.
Cut the 2×2 pieces for the top supports. Secure the supports in place using glue and countersunk 2-1/2″ screws.
Step Five
Position the top on the leg base with the supports to the inside of the legs. Secure in place using glue and countersunk 3″ screws through the supports into the legs.
Finish as desired.
The “seams” between the 2x4s in each leg assembly can be filled and sanded prior to finishing. Have any questions about the DIY furniture plans to build an X Leg Coffee Table? Leave a comment below!
