Build a Rustic End Table

Materials:

  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
  • 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws (<–affiliate link!)
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • Edge banding, optional
  • 1 – Cabinet pull
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)
  • Paste Wax

Lumber:

  • 3 – 1×2 at 8′
  • 1 – 1×3 at 2′
  • 1 – 1×4 at 8′
  • 2 – 2×2 at 8′
  • 1 – 2′ x 2′ sheet of 3/4″ plywood
  • 1 – 2′ x 4′ sheet of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 4 – 2×2 at 23″ – Legs
  • 4 – 1×2 at 11-3/4″ – Side Frames
  • 9 – 1×2 at 18″ – Side & Back Slats
  • 4 – 2×2 at 13-1/2″ – Back Frame & Front Stretchers
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 11-3/4″ x 15″ – Lower Shelf
  • 2 – 1×3 at 11-3/4″ – Upper Shelf Spacers
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 13-1/2″ x 14″ – Upper Shelf
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 15-1/4″ x 17-1/2″ – Top
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 11-3/4″ x 12-1/2″ – Drawer Bottom
  • 2 – 1×4 at 12-1/2″ – Drawer Sides
  • 2 – 1×4 at 13-1/4″ – Drawer Front & Back

Notes About the Project:

Edge banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood before assembly.

Step One

Cut the pieces for the legs, side frames, and slats. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the frame pieces as well as the slats. Secure the slats to the frame pieces using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Secure the side frame assembly to the legs using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The outside face of the side assemblies will be flush with the outside face of the legs.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the back frame and the slats. Drill pocket holes in each end of each piece, setting the pocket hole jig for the appropriate thickness of material. Secure the slats to the frame pieces using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Secure the frame assembly to the legs using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. The outside face of the side assemblies will be flush with the outside face of the legs.

Step Three

Cut the pieces for the front stretchers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the legs using glue and 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws.

Step Four

Cut the pieces for the lower shelf. Drill pocket holes in all four edges. Secure to the front stretchers and lower frame pieces using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. The top face of the shelf will be flush with the top edge of the stretchers and lower frame pieces.

Step Five

Cut the pieces for the upper shelf spacers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the legs at the sides as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Six

Cut the piece for the upper shelf and drill pocket holes in the side edges. Secure to the upper shelf spacers using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Seven

Cut the piece for the top. Position the piece so that the front and sides overhang by 1/2″. Secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Eight

Cut the pieces for the drawer boxes. Cut the pieces for the drawer boxes. Drill pocket holes in all four edges of the bottom as well as each end of the sides. Assemble the drawer box as shown using glue and 1-1/4” pocket hole screws.

Finish as desired. Apply a coat of paste wax to the bottom of the drawer to help it slide smoothly along the shelf. Install the cabinet pull.
