An Easy to Build Plyometric Box for High Intensity Workouts
I am a certified personal trainer, and obviously I love to work out! I may be a glutton for punishment but I really love high intensity workouts… A lot of these workouts use a 3-in-1 plyometric (plyo) box (which increases the intensity of the workout and elevates the heart rate) and I decided to build my own. The DIY plans to build a plyo box for workouts is for a 12-14-16 box (meaning there are three different height levels) which is constructed out of 3/4″ plywood with supports inside for stability. The hard edges of the plywood are sanded down or rounded with a router. This is a really easy and inexpensive build, and the DIY plyometric box is an excellent addition to any home gym!
Materials:
- 1-1/2″ screws (<– affiliate link!)
Lumber:
- 1 – 4′ x 4′ sheet of 3/4″ plywood
Cut List:
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 10-1/2″ x 14-1/2″ – 12″ High Sides
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 10-1/2″ x 14″ – 14″ High Sides
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 14″ x 16″ – 16″ High Sides
- 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 5-7/8″ x 10-1/2″ – Center Support
- 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 10-1/2″ x 14-1/2″ – Center Support
Notes about the project:
Hand holds can be cut into the sides of the Crossfit plyo box using a 1″ paddle bit and a jigsaw. I cut the holes but did not make it a full handhold by cutting the center with a jigsaw. The height numbers can be painted on the faces of the DIY plyo box as a decorative touch but are not necessary!
Step One
Cut each of the pieces as listed in the cut list. To cut the holes, mark the position on the 12″ side (see drawing) and cut the holes using a 1″ paddle bit. If desired, a jigsaw can be used to make cuts connecting the top and bottom holes to make a full handhold.
Step Two
Secure the 14″ high sides to the 12″ high sides (as shown in the drawing) using glue and countersunk 1-1/2″ screws to make a frame.
Step Three
Secure the supports inside the box using glue and countersunk 1-1/2″ screws. The center of the smaller support pieces will not be attached but should fit snugly between the center support and the outer frame.
Step Four
Position the 16″ high side on the outside of the frame then secure in place using glue and 1-1/2″ countersunk screws.
Step Five
A router with a roundover bit can be used inside the holes so the edges aren’t as sharp. Sand the hard edges of the box as desired. Paint or stain are not necessary!
