How to Build Wooden Boxes for Storage

Hey there! Don’t we all need some extra storage in our lives? I always find myself running out of space to store all my crafty supplies and essentials that I use for my amazing projects – it’s never enough! So, I had this brilliant idea to make my own storage boxes using some leftover plywood, scrapbooking paper, and paint.

The best part about this project is that it’s completely customizable! You can make the boxes any size you want and there are endless ways to make them uniquely yours. You could even make a few to hold special gifts for those extra special occasions!

Materials:

3/8″ or 1/2″ plywood
Glue and brad nailer with 3/4″ brad nails
Paint
Scrapbooking paper
Mod Podge
Sponge brushes

I cut my pieces on the table saw…

Start by running a bead of glue along one of the long edges of the shorter pieces. Attach the bottom with the brad nails. Repeat for the other side piece as well as the front and back.

Construct the top in the same manner.

The box will not have to be thoroughly sanded except for the inside and the edges.

Remember the Clark + Kensington free paint day at Ace Hardware back in March? I’d only used mine once to paint the inside of the Rebecca Trunk so I decided I’d use it to paint the inside of these boxes. The color I chose is Harbor Lane. I used two coats, then sealed with a couple coats of Rust-Oleum’s Ultimate Polyurethane in Soft Touch Matte. If you haven’t used this product, it is the bomb, I swear! No brush strokes and it is self-leveling plus it provides a smooth and fantastic finish to stained or painted projects!

Once the paint was dry, I selected the scrapbooking paper I wanted to use for each box. I cut a couple of strips to go around the side adding a 1/2″ to the width (and I scored it so it would fold easier) so it would fold over the bottom.

I put a coat of Mod Podge on each side of the box and positioned the paper with the fold over the edges.

I repeated the process for the top. Because of the odd size of my box, I had to use two pieces for the top and longer sides.

Plans to build the box:

Determine the size of the finished box. Click on the drawings to make them larger and write in your measurements subtracting 3/4″ (if using 3/8″ material) for the longer side pieces or 1″ (if using 1/2″ material). For the lid, add 3/4″ (If using 3/8″ material) to the length and width of the top piece or 1″ to the length and width (if using 1/2″ material), as well as the side pieces in order for the lid to fit over the box.
