The Perfect Magazine Rack

Hey there! If you’re anything like me, you probably have a bunch of magazines lying around with no proper place to store them. Well, maybe you don’t have as many as I do, but I’m sure you have a few, right? No worries, though! I’ve come across these awesome free plans to build a Midland magazine rack that I think you’ll find really interesting. The best part is, it’ll easily blend in with any decor you have! And hey, it’s a great way to reduce that pesky scrap pile too!

Lumber:

  • 1 – 1×2 at 8′
  • 2 – 3/8″ (actual dimension) x 2″ (1-1/2″) craft boards at 4′
  • Scraps of 1×8 at 5″ each
  • Scrap of 1×6 at 13-1/2″

Cut List:

  • 2 – 1×8 (ripped to 7″ wide)  at 5″ – Ends
  • 1 – 1×6 (ripped to 5″ wide) at 13-1/2″ – Shelf
  • 8 – 3/8″ x 2″ craft boards at 9-3/8″ – X Pieces
  • 4 – 1×2 at 10″ – Side Frames
  • 4 – 1×2 at 12-3/4″ – Side Frames

Step One

Cut the pieces for the ends. Cut the angles as shown using a jigsaw or a bandsaw.

Cut the piece for the shelf and drill pocket holes at each end. Secure the shelf to the ends as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Cut the pieces for the Xs. Note that the angles are not cut at 45 degrees!

Cut the pieces for the side frames. Drill pocket hole sin each end of the longer pieces. Assemble the frames using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Position the Xs inside the frame then secure using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Attach the side frames to the end pieces and shelf using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Finish as desired!
