An Ultra-Stylish Corner Media Stand

Hey there! If you’re running out of space, don’t worry! Corner furniture is always a great option. And guess what? We’ve got some awesome DIY plans for you to build your very own Rushton Media Stand. This beauty comes with two outer cabinets with doors, a center cabinet with doors, an open center shelf, and some fancy mitered corners on the door frames. Now, don’t let its looks fool you. This cabinet may seem challenging, but trust us, it’s actually super easy to build!

Materials:

  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws (<– affiliate link!)
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • Edge banding, optional
  • 4 sets of hinges
  • Cabinet pulls
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)

Lumber:

  • 5 – 1×3 at 8′
  • 1 – 1×4 at 4′
  • 1 – 4′ x 8′ sheet of 1/4″ plywood
  • 2 – 4′ x 8′ sheets of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 1 – 1×3 at 57″ – Base Frame Front
  • 2 – 1×3 at 1-3/4″ – Base Frame Sides
  • 2 – 1×3 at 24-3/4″ – Base Frame Sides
  • 1 – 1×3 at 22″ – Base Frame Back
  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 57″ – Bottom & Top
  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 18″ x 20″ – Dividers
  • 2 – 1×4 at 18″ – Sides
  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 16″ x 18-1/4″ – Outer Cabinet Shelves
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 19″ x 22″ – Lower Center Shelf
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 20″ x 22″ – Upper Center Shelf
  • 1 – 1/4″ plywood at 19″ x 22″ – Center Back Panel
  • 2 – 1/4″ plywood at 19″ x 24″ – Side Back Panels
  • 4 – 1×3 at 10-13/16″ – Smaller Door Frames
  • 4 – 1×3 at 12″ – Smaller Door Frames
  • 4 – 1×3 at 15-3/4″ – Larger Door Frames
  • 4 – 1×3 at 17-3/4″ – Larger Door Frames
  • 2 – 1/4″ plywood at 6-5/16″ x 7-1/2″ – Smaller Door Panels
  • 2 – 1/4″ plywood at 11-1/4″ x 13-1/4″ – Larger Door Panels

Step One

Edge banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood prior to assembly!

Cut the piece for the base frame front. Draw the arc on the front, then cut out with a jigsaw or a band saw.

Cut the remaining pieces for the base frame. Cut 45° bevels in each end of the 24-3/4″ pieces. Assemble the frame using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the top and the bottom. Set the one piece aside for the top, then secure the other piece to the base frame using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Three

Cut the pieces for the sides and the dividers. Cut a 45° bevel in the back edge of each piece. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ plywood, drill pocket holes in the lower edges of each piece treating each pair as a left and a right. Secure the sides and dividers to the bottom as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Four

Cut the pieces for the outer shelves. Treating each piece as a left and a right piece, drill pocket holes as shown. Secure the shelves to the sides and dividers using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Five

Cut the piece for the lower center shelf and drill pocket holes in each side edge. Secure to the dividers as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Cut the piece for the upper center shelf and drill pocket holes in each side edge. Secure to the dividers as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Six

Position the top on the sides and dividers, then secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Seven

Cut the piece for the center back. Secure to the top, bottom, and the center shelves using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Cut the pieces for the side back. Secure to the sides, dividers, and outer shelves using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Eight

Cut the pieces for the door frames and cut 45° miters in each end. Drill pocket holes in the mitered edges as shown. Use a router and a 1/4″ rabbeting bit to cut a rabbet at the inside of the frame for the panel.

Cut the pieces for the door panels. Apply a bead of glue along the rabbet and set the panel in place. Clamp until dry. Install the hinges on the doors, then install the doors in the cabinet.

Finish as desired.

    WTF is up with every plan that I see insisting on using pocket holes. Pilot hole and drill as normal. Only reason for it is if you are planning to go pro. Can we get stuff on here that is actually DIY?

      Uh, the last time I checked, “DIY” stands for “Do It Yourself”, which this plan definitely is regardless of what type of joinery is used. If pocket holes (suitable for ALL skill levels, not just “pro”) are not satisfactory, feel free to substitute another method. (By the way, pocket holes are a type of pilot hole set at an angle…)
