DIY Plans to Build a Brecken Dresser Hutch

Add Additional Storage to a Dresser or Cabinet

Hey there! Remember when I shared the plans for the Brecken Dresser? It’s a great beginner project! Well, guess what? You can take it up a notch and add even more storage to it! Introducing the DIY plans for the Brecken Dresser Hutch! It’s super easy to build and comes with a middle shelf. You can attach it to the top of the Brecken Dresser or any other cabinet you have. DIY Plans to Build a Brecken Dresser Hutch-Copy

Materials:

  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws (<– affiliate link!)
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • 1-3/4″ brad nails
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)

Lumber:

  • 2 – 1×2 at 6′
  • 2 – 1×2 at 8′
  • 1 – 4′ x 4′ sheet of 1/4″ plywood
  • 1 – 4′ x 8′ sheet of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 12″ x 29-3/4″ – Sides
  • 5 – 1×2 at 32-1/2″ – Front & Back Stretchers
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12″ x 32-1/2″ – Shelf
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12″ x 34″ – Top
  • 2 – 1×2 at 30-1/2″- Face Frame
  • 2 – 1×2 at 31″ – Face Frame
  • 1 – 1/4″ plywood at 29-3/4″ x 33-1/4″ – Back

Step One

Cut the pieces for the sides. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pocket holes in the lower end of the side pieces.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the stretchers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure the stretchers to the front and back of the sides as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Three

Cut the piece for the shelf. Position the shelf on the middle stretchers securing in place with glue and 1-3/4″ brad nails.

Step Four

Cut the piece for the top. The top is flush on all sides. Secure the top in place using glue and 1-3/4″ brad nails.

Step Five

Cut the pieces for the face frame. Drill pocket holes in each end of the horizontal pieces (the 31″ pieces). Secure the horizontal pieces to the vertical pieces using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Secure the face frame to the front of the cabinet. The outside edges of the vertical pieces will be flush with the sides, the top horizontal piece will be flush with the top, and the top of the middle horizontal piece will be flush with the top of the shelf. Secure the face frame using glue and 1-3/4″ brad nails.

Step Six

Cut the piece for the back. Secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Finish as desired. Position the hutch on top of the dresser so that the back is flush with the back of the dresser. Secure in place with 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.
